It was ushered in with all the fanfare and slick advertising that customers expect from Apple.
But the US firm faced embarrassment yesterday after thousands of customers struggled to download its new operating system for iPhones and iPads.
Apple claims the iOS7 software is so advanced it effectively turns existing iPhones and iPads into new devices. However, many of those who tried to download it simply received an error message.
The iOS 7 update was made available to download from 6pm UK time (1pm EST) on Wednesday, but no sooner had it been made available, users started to complain about experiencing difficulties downloading it.

Expectant Apple customers attempted to upgrade

Thousands of frustrated Apple customers took to Twitter and other social-networking sites to voice their frustrations over the tech giant’s newly-launched mobile software.
‘Frustrating I keep getting an error when trying to download #ios7 I bet servers crashed with whole world trying to download at same time,’ @NickHampsey tweeted.
'So I guess I'm not the only one that gets "an error occured while downloading iOS 7.0" every time I try to update my phone,' tweeted @asap_cali187.
The launch of iOS 7 is the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone launched and judging from reaction on social media, it seems the company’s servers haven’t been able to handle the huge surge in traffic.

'Not enough memory to download the iOS 7. Hmm. Well, sayonara, wedding photos,' @Amburglar tweeted.
'I've deleted every single app on my phone other than twitter and I still don't have enough memory to download iOS 7,' tweeted an exasperated @LiveForJLS.
Tests carried out by Ars Technica also noticed that iOS 7 has a significant impact on the battery life of certain handsets during its comprehensive review of the software.
It found that all of the handsets were 'negatively impacted by the iOS 6 to iOS 7 transition' but the iPhone 5 dropped from 661 minutes battery life on iOS 6 to 444 minutes with iOS 7.

Apple executives have hailed iOS 7 as a new beginning. Everything from email to the calendar, texts, phone keypad, photos and notes look and work differently than before.
Traditional icons have been scrapped under the redesign masterminded by Apple's British design chief Sir Jonathan Ive.
Ive introduced iOS 7 as an 'important new direction' when he showcased the software at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this year.

Its launch this week coincides with the release of two new iPhones.
The iPhone 5C comes in five colours and is a plastic version of the current iPhone 5 model. It was dubbed a low-cost alternative but has been criticized for still being too expensive.
Apple's iPhone 5S is a high-end model that has a fingerprint scanner built into the phone's home button.
It also comes with a 64-bit chip designed to make switching between apps and using the handset and software smoother and faster.
Apple's iOS 7 has been designed to make the iPhone appear bigger, with features deliberately designed to take advantage of the entire screen on iPhones and iPads.
This has been criticised as Apple's attempt to rival phones with larger, five-inch and upward screens including Samsung's Galaxy S4 and the Note 3.
Text on iOS 7 appears sharper, while a Control Center on the phone allows users to adjust settings with just one swipe from of the screen.
This gives instant access to settings including Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Do Not Disturb, and resembles the jump bar on the Android operating system. Apple users can also control music playback from this menu.
Additionally, iOS 7 has a feature called Today that gives an at-a-glance look at the day ahead. The menu can also now be opened while the screen is locked.
It shows live weather and traffic information, for example, updated in real-time as well as birthdays or upcoming events.
Individual apps can also be controlled and closed by double-clicking the 'home' button and swiping up in iOS 7.
Apple's updated photo feature has added Years, Collections, and Moments that groups images and videos together based on when and where they were taken.
